Third in the standings in the East, New York City FC stayed clear of CF Montreal by losing 3-1 to Charlotte FC on Wednesday.

Only one point behind Montreal in the standings, NYCFC missed its chance to grab second place. New York has 42 points, while the Montrealers have 43 points in the bank. Both teams have played 25 games since the start of the season.

Karol Swiderski opened the scoring in the 4th minute to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead. Before half-time, Maxime Chanot managed to create a 1-1 tie and bring the counters to zero in the match.

Brandt Bronico (77′) and Christian Fuchs (penalty 91′) hit the target in the second half to give Charlotte a 3-1 win at Red Bull Arena in New York.

In addition to taking 14 shots off target, more than double their rivals, New York City FC kept possession of the ball 60% of the time in this game, so the defeat is doubly hard to swallow in the New York camp.
