“Monkey pox” in Berlin: ways of a virus

Whether the name can be created again from the world? “Monkeypox” is the name of the pathogen that made the headlines this summer – because it was first detected in a laboratory monkey in Denmark in the 1950s. But even then it was a so-called false host, actually the “Monkeypox” virus (MPX) spreads via rodents. “It has been circulating in West and Central Africa, especially in the Congo region, for thousands of years, so it’s nothing new,” says Hartmut Stocker, chief physician at the Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Joseph Hospital Tempelhof.
