Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis, i.e. initially transmitted from animals to humans, and before the current epidemic, it was mainly found in central and western Africa, especially in areas near forests, because the hosts are rodents and monkeys.

With a historic death rate of 6%, the virus responsible for the disease, monkeypox, belongs to the same family as human smallpox, which was eradicated in 1980 and was much more deadly.

Monkeypox is currently being treated as a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) and, despite its name, it does not originate from monkeys, as it was only first identified in these animals.

Transmission can occur through contact with an infected animal or human. The main symptoms are:

  • a fever
  • headache
  • muscle fatigue
  • Back ache
  • swollen glands (lymph nodes)
  • chills
  • exhaustion
