“Monkeypox Outbreak: CDC Warns of Summer Resurgence and Urges Vaccination”

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned of the potential risk of a resurgence this summer of the mpox virus, or monkeypox virus, formerly known as monkeypox.

“In the United States, mpox virus cases have declined since their peak in August 2022, but the outbreak is not over,” the CDC said in an official health information bulletin released this week, adding, ” The spring and summer 2023 season could lead to a resurgence of the mpox virus as people gather at festivals and other events.”

This alert to doctors in the United States comes as an outbreak of mpox cases has been recorded in the Chicago area.

From April 17 to May 5, 12 confirmed cases and one probable case of mpox were reported to the Chicago Department of Public Health, according to the CDC.

The CDC said it continues to receive reports of cases reflecting ongoing community transmission in the United States and internationally, encouraging vaccination of those at risk.

As of May 10, 30,395 cases of mpox had been reported in the United States, according to the CDC.
