Mons Christmas Market: Safety Measures and New Year’s Eve Celebration

Astonishment and worry therefore animated the Christmas market in Mons this Saturday. Ambulances came in large numbers to take care of a lady with second-degree burns following an ethanol fire. “The incident took place in a chalet that sells products made from ethanol. The person occupying the premises wanted to fill a chimney with this flammable liquid when the incident took place. He was probably too hasty in his approach. The chimney was not yet completely empty, a spark appeared, causing it to catch fire. It all happened in just ten seconds. It was nevertheless enough to burn a lady who was passing in front of the chalet at that time,” explains Hilele Henini, president of the non-profit organization Gestion Centre-Ville de Mons.

Although this incident is an isolated incident, the non-profit organization in charge of the Mons Christmas market took the decision to close the chalet in question so as not to take any further risk. In addition to this, other measures will be applied during future editions of the Mons Christmas market. “From next year, we will ban all flammable products from the Christmas market to prevent such an event from happening again. An exception will still be made to chalets offering Horeca,” announces Hilele Henini.

The Mons Christmas market will welcome visitors for the transition to the new year

In the meantime, the Mons Christmas market still intends to entertain visitors until the turn of the year. It will also be possible to spend New Year’s Eve on the Grand-Place in Mons and thus take advantage of the many chalets available on site. “New Year’s Eve will be the last major event of this Christmas market. After that, we will be able to close the doors of this 19th edition and do the accounts,” concludes Hilele Henini.

This last meeting plans a New Year’s Eve in the heart of the Mons Christmas market from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. On the program, visitors will be able to enjoy a dance evening hosted by DJs and, of course, fireworks. To prepare for the event, the Christmas market will be closed from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. before welcoming visitors. A way to forget the incident that occurred this Saturday and move on to 2024 in the best possible way.
