Stéeanos Tsitsipas made short work of Fabio Fognini! For his first match on clay since his final at Roland-Garros in 2021, the Greek did not have to do much to defeat a Fognini who was too little concerned (6-3, 6-0). It is with barely an hour of play in the legs that Tsitsipas joins the next round.
The two players had the potential to fight a good fight on a surface that they particularly like. The show never took place. On the Rainier III court, Fognini showed absolutely nothing of the extent of his talent while Tsitsipas gave what was needed to get his opponent out.

In the first game, the debates seemed balanced as Fognini got an input break ball, which was ultimately not converted. A first miss that preceded a break against the Italian, then a confirmation from the Greek. 3-0 from the start of the game. And then, a flurry of pride from Fognini who finally stuck to 3-3, thanks in part to a different quality of ball offered to his opponent.
One would have thought that the match was only the beginning of a long battle, but Fognini sank. Imprecise, inconstant, impatient, so many adjectives to qualify the Italian for the rest of this match. Author of too many faults, sometimes not provoked at all, Fognini completely dropped his match.
The Italian finally got sprayed on the heavy score of 6-3, 6-0. A rather reassuring victory for Tsitsipas who is attacking one of the most prolific periods for his game. Fabio Fognini, meanwhile, is expected to drop to the top of the table, with another title defending here in Monte Carlo in 2019.
