Montérégie Doctors Decry Opti-lab Computer System Failures – Chaos in the Health Network

It is the turn of a group of doctors from Montérégie to decry the new Opti-lab computer system which has been gradually implemented in the health network for a year and which has experienced numerous failures.

Doctors no longer receive the results of urgent tests that their patients have done at the hospital, but they receive an astronomical quantity of faxes which waste them a lot of time to the detriment of the patients.

Host Patrick Lagacé welcomes Dr. Joëlle Bertrand-Bovet, doctor in a family medicine group (GMF) in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

Is the use of the term “panic” an exaggeration?

“No. That’s the right term. I’ve been using it since the beginning of the week. It’s really chaotic in our region. We are completely in panic.”

And what’s the problem?

“It took a few days before we realized the problem because we had not been informed of it. However, this laboratory has already been installed in other regions for a year. So, it’s not new that we are aware of these issues.

“To give you a very clear example… Normally, when a patient goes for a blood test, we receive the result the same day, or the next day, in our computer medical file at the clinic. So, we can quickly take action if there is anything abnormal.

“For two weeks unfortunately, if the patient has an urgent blood test to take, if he has to go to the hospital the same day to take this blood test, it is no longer sent to us in our computerized medical file. So we realized after a few days that we were not receiving urgent tests.

“Talking among colleagues, we realized that it was like that for everyone. So, it wasn’t that the patient hadn’t gone to the appointment, he had gone, but we hadn’t been notified. It no longer fits into our computer systems. So, we realized that there were lots of laboratories waiting somewhere. It is printed on a printer at the hospital, but we were not informed and we could not have access to the laboratory.

We listen to it…
