In the Peter and Paul Fortress they chose a sketch of a monument to the singer and musician Fyodor Chaliapin. The results of an open architectural competition organized by the Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture with the participation of the F. I. Shalyapin Musical Theater were announced on November 10.
The first place was taken by the sketch of the sculptor Evgeny Rotanov and the architect Ivan Kozhin. “It is clear that there is inspiration here from the work of Kustodiev – probably the most recognizable image of Chaliapin in our minds. From the point of view of setting up the monument and landscaping the square, everything is extremely conservative and laconic. It should not draw attention away from the figure itself, which is very expressive,” Kozhin told Fontanka.
At least one joint work of Rotanov and Kozhin is already well known to St. Petersburg residents – this is the “falling” Alexander Blok, installed on Dekabristov Street.

Second place was awarded to the project of Arsen Levonyan and Elizaveta Silaeva – this is a bronze statue that depicts the singer at the time of his performance. Third place went to the sketch by Konstantin Garapach. He imagined the performer sitting in a theater chair.

The winner is entitled to a prize of 400 thousand rubles, the second and third place winners receive 100 thousand rubles each.
More than 60 works took part in the competition, which lasted almost three months. You can look at all the proposed options until November 11 inclusive; the exhibition is open until 18:00.
They are going to install the monument in Alexander Park, next to the F. I. Shalyapin Musical Theatre. As Fyodor Boltin, Deputy Chairman of the Culture Committee, clarified, it is assumed that the monument to Chaliapin will appear in 2026.
