The difficulties of several major sectors of activity are being felt. More than 25,000 business leaders lost their jobs in the first half of 2023, according to the Entrepreneurs’ Employment Observatory, a study carried out by the GSC association and the Altares company. This is 36.6% more over one year. The level before the Covid crisis has been regained.

“While inflation, rising raw material costs, interest rates, depletion of order books and repayment of EMPs [prêts garantis par l’Etat] weaken business leaders, it is more important than ever to support them so that they can secure their professional trajectory”, warns Anthony Streicher, president of the GSC association.

140 unemployed entrepreneurs per day

According to this study, the median age of these entrepreneurs pushed into unemployment is 45.9 years, and more than a third are over 51 years old. But it is nevertheless entrepreneurs between 41 and 50 who are the most affected, with 6,800 leaders in this age group who have lost their jobs. The increase in unemployment among young entrepreneurs should not be overlooked either, with an increase of more than 40% among those under 30, even if they remain the least affected.

Nearly nine out of ten job losses concern leaders at the head of small structures, with fewer than 5 employees. But it should also be noted that the number of entrepreneurs with more than 20 employees who lost their jobs has doubled compared to last year.

All of France pays the price

The study reports that the most affected region is Ile-de-France, with nearly 5,500 unemployed entrepreneurs this year, which represents almost a quarter of job losses in France for this category. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes comes second.

Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (Paca) and Overseas, on the other hand, recorded the weakest changes in the number of unemployed business leaders. The Paca region still recorded nearly 2,500 job losses in the first half of 2023.

Biggest rise in insurance and finance

The construction sector had to say goodbye to more than 5,500 of its business leaders, and the same observation in the trade sector: they are the most affected. As for the hotel and catering industry, a sector particularly suffering from inflation, nearly 3,500 entrepreneurs have lost their jobs.

However, the strongest increase was observed in the field of insurance and finance, with an increase of 76.4%: these are in particular brokers and asset managers, weakened by the slowdown In the real estate.
