More than 160 thousand Cuban-Spanish people reside in Cuba: And those who are missing! 2024-03-24 05:00:29

According to data from the Spanish government, more than 167 thousand Spaniards reside in Cuba, of which more than 160 thousand are Cuban-Spanish. That is, the vast majority obtained Iberian citizenship through some nationality process, by being descendants. And those who are missing!

According to figures this week, from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the number of Spanish citizens living in Cuba reached 167,684 in 2023. This represents an increase of 6,851 people compared to 2022.

However, it is important to highlight that only 1,212 of these Spanish residents were born in Spain, which is equivalent to 0.7% of the total. The majority, therefore, are Cubans who have obtained Spanish nationality through various laws and processes, such as the current so-called “Grandchildren Law”, although in reality it is called the Democratic Memory Law.

A figure that will continue to grow, even more so when the Spanish government has just extended the deadline to apply for Spanish citizenship through the Nietos Law, until October 2025. Hundreds of thousands of Cubans, descendants of Spaniards, will take advantage of this extension to obtain a nationality. that opens many doors for them, especially to emigrate or travel freely, with the current most powerful passport in the world.

The number of Cuban-Spanish people on the island increases

This week, Spanish-Cubans or Cubans of Spanish descent received the good news from the Spanish Consulate in Havana that appointments for Spanish passports in the Cuban capital would be expanded, one of the main demands.

“Starting on March 18, passport appointments will be expanded for first applications and renewals,” they said from the diplomatic headquarters.

The procedures at the Spanish consular headquarters in Havana are being expedited, as confirmed by the authorities. This is excellent news for Cuban citizens waiting for the resolution of their applications for visas, passports or other consular procedures.

The arrival of a new batch of passports to the Honorary Vice Consulates in Santa Clara, Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba a few days ago will also help alleviate the workload at the consular headquarters in Havana.
