Dakar, Feb 15 (APS) – At least 39,106 deaths have been counted more than a week after the earthquake that shook southern Turkey and northern Syria, according to official counts relayed by several media .
In the southern localities of Turkey hit by the earthquake, 35,118 people have so far lost their lives. Some 3,688 dead have been recorded in northwestern Syria.
The United Nations is counting on a much heavier human toll, while relief operations were still continuing on Tuesday.
The UN, through the voice of its leader, Antonio Guteres, on Sunday launched an appeal for donations of 400 million dollars to help direct and indirect victims, including nearly five million Syrians.
A similar appeal should be launched in favor of Turkey.
