From January to November of the year 2023, a total of 13,124 road accidents were recorded across the country, resulting in the deaths of 2,836 people, with 16,275 injured, according to the head of the Institutional Communication and Press Department of the Traffic Directorate and Road Safety (DTSR), Adriano do Rosário

Road accidents continue to be the second biggest cause of death nationwide, followed by malaria and high blood pressure. In the year that is about to end and, although the number is still very high, Angola recorded, in 2023, fewer road accidents and deaths compared to the same period last year.

The province of Luanda leads the list with 3,011 cases, Benguela follows with 1,038, Huíla 1,229, Huambo 900, Cabinda 707 and Zaire with 715, respectively. Regarding the issue related to the nature of accidents, the most frequent records are collisions between cars and motorcycles, collisions between motorcycles, skids followed by collisions, rollovers and pedestrian collisions.

Still in relation to the situation of road accidents in the country, the interviewee made it known that the main victims were passengers, pedestrians and, in some cases, the drivers themselves, aged between 15 and 50, of whom the majority were male.

Despite the data, which he considers frightening, “Angola recorded, in the first half of 2023, a slight reduction in accidents and deaths compared to the same period last year, in the order of 0.3% and 7%, respectively, despite having an increase in the number of injured people by 0.5%,” he said.
