To secure Stafura, the Mets agreed to pay $8 million of the remainder of Weaver’s contract, including $6 million for next season.
- Emilien Pitre: A 23-year-old second baseman acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a deal that also sent Freddy Peralta to the Rays.
Strategic Long-Term Outlook
Stearns characterized the deadline moves as gathering “pieces” rather than just players. He explained that acquiring minor league talent allows the team to either have those players directly impact the major league squad in the future or use them as trade chips to acquire other players this winter. Stearns noted that the team explored adding major league players for 2027 and beyond during the deadline but deemed the prices too high.
The move to trade relievers was partly influenced by the general supply of relievers in the free-agent market, which Stearns suggested makes it easier to fill bullpen needs via signings. Among the Monday trades, only Weaver and Brazoban were fully under team control beyond 2026, though Brazoban is 36 and turns 37 in October.
