According to the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Morocco welcomed four million tourists in the first four months of 2023, which represents an increase of 13% compared to 2019. Tourism receipts also experienced strong growth, reaching 25 billion dirhams (MMDH) at the end of March 2023, an increase of 51% compared to 2019.

The majority of tourists, 70%, come from the European market. The cities of Marrakech and Agadir remain the most popular destinations, attracting 60% of visitors.

The minister highlighted the impact of the 2 billion dirhams emergency plan, which has enabled Morocco to reach 93 billion dirhams in tourism revenue for the first time in 2022, an increase of 16% compared to 2019. The number of overnight stays in classified tourist accommodation establishments also experienced strong growth, reaching 19 million, an increase of 192% compared to 2021. Of these overnight stays, 42% are attributed to internal tourism, compared to 31% before the related crisis to COVID-19.

The 2023-2026 roadmap for the tourism sector, with a budget of 6.1 billion dirhams, aims to attract 17.5 million tourists, generate 120 billion dirhams in foreign currency and create 200,000 direct and indirect jobs. It also foresees a transformation of the sector through a new vision of the tourist offer focused on the customer experience, as well as measures aimed at strengthening air transport, commercialization and marketing, paying particular attention to digitalization.

Other objectives of the roadmap include the diversification of cultural animation and entertainment products, the promotion of modern small and medium-sized enterprises, the rehabilitation of hotels, the development of new accommodation capacities and the improvement of capital. human through training and human resource management. To ensure the success of this roadmap, new governance has been put in place, in particular with the creation of a national interministerial commission for tourism chaired by the Head of Government, as well as national and regional commissions responsible for monitoring the plans. sectors.

The Ministry of Tourism has already started regional meetings in Marrakech, Casablanca and Agadir as part of the implementation of the roadmap.
