With a score of 85.1 points out of 100, Morocco exceeds the world average of 72.8 out of 100, as well as the African average of 47.4. The country therefore tops African countries in terms of development of information and communication technologies, assessed by the ICT development index established by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

The Kingdom is ahead of Mauritius (81.7) and the Seychelles (80.9), South Africa (80.5) and Libya (79.4) and comes after Finland (98. 1), Denmark (98.2), Qatar (98.7), the United States (99.1) and the United Arab Emirates which have 100 points.

It scored well in assessing the price of mobile data and voice services, percentage of individuals using the internet, mobile broadband penetration rate, mobile broadband internet traffic (in gigabytes per subscription), as well as the rate of mobile phone ownership.

In detail, Morocco stands out in Africa thanks in particular to a penetration rate of 99.3% for 3G and 99.1% for 4G, the percentage of individuals using the internet (88.1%) and the percentage of households having access to the internet at home (86.2%).

According to data from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), Morocco had a total of 54.11 million mobile telephone subscribers at the end of June 2023 (an increase of 5% compared to the same period in 2022), including 36.61 million internet subscribers.

Moreover, this important score is largely due to the investments made by the Kingdom in recent years. Indeed, Morocco was the first African country to adopt 3G technology, and it is already preparing for the transition to 5G, which has not yet been introduced.

On the other hand, Morocco has made significant investments in improving Internet access and telecoms infrastructure, which earned it, in 2021, the position of the second country in terms of “digital transformation” in Africa, just behind South Africa.

The country has set up a special fund to connect places where there is not much population, especially rural areas. According to the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of digital transition and administrative reform, Ghita Mezzour, this fund made it possible to cover with internet 96% of localities which had no internet coverage or low internet coverage. .
