Moss Developer Polyarc Shuts Down After 12 Years

Polyarc Games, the Seattle-based virtual reality studio best known for developing the critically acclaimed Moss franchise, has closed its doors after nearly twelve years in operation.

End of an Era for the Creators of Quill

The studio’s journey came to a formal halt as the team published a farewell statement detailing the conclusion of their twelve-year operational run. “Today is the end of an era for Polyarc. After nearly 12 years riding the joyous rollercoaster of emotions that is making video games, our time together has come to an end,” the company stated on LinkedIn, as reported by Insider Gaming and UploadVR. The developers noted that working together over the years had been an honor and expressed gratitude to everyone who had been part of the journey.

To mitigate the impact of the shutdown, Polyarc circulated a spreadsheet containing contact details for its displaced personnel across various technical and creative disciplines. The closure follows a harsh trajectory for the studio, which had already endured a severe round of layoffs back in March 2026 that reduced its headcount by two-thirds.

From Groundbreaking VR Pioneers to Flat-Screen Adaptations

Founded in 2014, Polyarc cemented its reputation by proving that third-person perspective mechanics could thrive in virtual reality. The game accumulated over seven thousand five-star reviews across platforms.

The sequel, Moss: Book II (later titled Moss 2 VR), debuted on PlayStation VR in March 2022, followed by Quest 2 and PC VR releases later that year. The title earned major accolades, including VR/AR Game of the Year at The Game Awards and Game of the Year at the VR Awards, alongside multiple honors at the D.I.C.E. Awards and NYX Game Awards. Across both mainline entries, the franchise earned more than 160 industry awards and nominations.

Despite critical adoration, commercial realities shifted. Polyarc expanded its intellectual property in November 2025 with Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss, a PvP strategy game on Apple Arcade and Steam that struggled to capture a broad audience, landing a “Mixed” rating on Steam from just 22 reviews and a 4.7 score from 229 ratings on the Meta Horizon Store. Earlier this year, the studio released Moss: The Forgotten Relic, a traditional non-VR flatscreen port combining both mainline adventures. Although the compilation secured numerous wishlists prior to its July launch, those prospective numbers evidently failed to convert into sufficient revenue to sustain operations.

Broader Industry Instability in 2026

Polyarc’s sudden demise underscores a punishing economic climate for independent game development teams throughout 2026. The studio joins a growing list of notable casualties across the sector, mirroring recent cutbacks at other developers like FuturLab—the studio behind PowerWash Simulator—which faced significant staff reductions and project cancellations earlier in the year.

As the Seattle developer winds down its infrastructure, the immediate priority remains the placement of its engineering, design, and art personnel. With the final farewell issued and active pipelines terminated, Polyarc leaves behind an influential legacy in immersive computing, having demonstrated the emotional resonance possible within virtual reality storytelling.
