Most’ of Star Wars Zero Company studio Bit Reactor was furloughed ahead of launch

Bit Reactor furloughed up to 80 percent of its staff and terminated contractors weeks before the August 27 launch of its debut game, Star Wars Zero Company. Despite critical acclaim and top sales on Steam, employees went unpaid while leadership cited financial strain and uncertainty ahead of release.

The launch of a major video game is traditionally a time for public celebration, critical validation, and, for the developers who built it, a moment to share in the industry’s rewards. For the Maryland-based studio Bit Reactor, however, the release of Star Wars Zero Company brought a starkly different reality. While co-founder Greg Foertsch gave interviews from the Gamescom show in Cologne, Germany, discussing what the studio might build next, the majority of the team that spent years creating the tactical combat game was going without pay.

Founded in 2021, Bit Reactor watched its financial reserves evaporate just as its first major project neared completion. The studio furloughed most of its employees and terminated its contractors weeks ahead of the August 27 debut. Sources close to the studio indicate that the cuts impacted roughly 80 percent of the staff, leaving only a skeleton crew on the active payroll to patch post-launch bugs.

Critical Acclaim and a Sudden Silence

When Star Wars Zero Company arrived on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC, it immediately captured the attention of players and reviewers alike. The title quickly surged to become the top-selling game on Steam, racking up a peak player count of 77,889 users on Valve’s platform alongside a Metacritic score of 85. That rating placed it on par with major releases and earned it praise as the highest-scoring Star Wars launch since Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – Sith Lords debuted back in 2004.

Yet that public triumph contrasted sharply with the internal atmosphere at the studio. Former developers voiced frustration over the public-facing messaging surrounding the game’s arrival. Zachariah Scott, a senior technical artist who worked at Bit Reactor from early 2023 until his departure in May, criticized the disconnect on LinkedIn.

Scott added that nearly a dozen workers he spoke with shared the same experience of being notified of their unpaid leave three weeks before the public release.

Corporate Autonomy Amid Financial Collapse

Given the intellectual property involved, questions immediately arose over where responsibility for the furloughs lay. A representative for Bit Reactor clarified to reporters that the decision was made entirely by the studio, independent of publisher Electronic Arts or Star Wars license holder Disney. The studio representative explained that the measure was a difficult choice executed before the game’s commercial reception could be measured, driven simply by the fact that the company had run out of operating cash.

Unlike a traditional layoff, a furlough means affected personnel remain technically employed but receive no wages during the hiatus. Studio representatives indicated an intention to bring furloughed workers back with restored pay if the game achieved commercial success. However, former employees remain skeptical about whether everyone affected will regain their positions, even as sales figures climb.

Ongoing Legal Battles and Ownership Dispute

The financial crisis at Bit Reactor unfolds alongside an internal leadership dispute that has played out in court filings. The furloughs first surfaced publicly through documents filed on August 12 in a lawsuit brought by former chief operating officer Alison Kelly. Kelly sued co-founder Greg Foertsch in 2024, alleging breach of contract and unjust enrichment, claiming she was pushed out of the company and denied an equal ownership stake. Kelly cited damages exceeding $20 million based on valuations of the studio.

Foertsch’s legal representation has disputed Kelly’s claims of co-ownership, arguing that her role was modified due to performance concerns. Court filings from Foertsch’s side assert that her allegations regarding restricted access to company records and financial benefits are groundless. With the legal proceedings involving depositions and counter-claims, the trial is scheduled to begin in early 2027.

Uncertain Future for Studio Staff

The current landscape leaves developers in limbo. While the studio’s debut project enjoys strong visibility on Steam and console storefronts, the team responsible for building it remains largely sidelined without compensation. Whether the commercial performance of Star Wars Zero Company will generate enough revenue to recall the workforce and settle outstanding financial obligations before the 2027 court date remains entirely unconfirmed.
