A five-year-old child and his mother were hit on Wednesday morning in Wilsele, in the commune of Louvain, by an empty car whose handbrake appeared to have failed, local police said on Wednesday, confirming information from Het Laatste Nieuws .

The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. while the mother was taking her child to school. They were hit on the sidewalk.

Passers-by managed to push away the empty vehicle and call emergency services, who took the two victims to hospital. They are conscious and their lives are not in danger.

The owner of the car claimed to have parked his vehicle and engaged the handbrake. The failure of this has not yet been explained.
