A woman and her six-year-old daughter were raped by a group of men who offered to drive them home in a car.
The incident occurred on a road in the city of Roorkee, in the Indian district of Haridwar (Uttarakhand), police sources reported, quoted by the Ndtv channel.
The mother had finished visiting a Muslim religious site, known as Piran Kaliyar, and after traveling in a ‘rickshaw’ (light two-wheeled vehicle that moves by human traction) heading home with her little girl, a stranger in a car offered to take them.
In addition to the driver, there were several other men inside the vehicle, authorities detail.
The individuals sexually abused both of them during the tour and then dumped them in a secluded spot near the Ganges channel.
The victim and her daughter managed to reach a police station and the complaint was filed approximately one hour after the crime. The woman could not specify how many were the aggressors inside the car and she only assured that those involved referred to the driver by the name of Sonu.
Medical analyzes of the mother and the girl confirmed the rape. Police launched an operation to catch those responsible.
“Security camera images are being analyzed and vehicle checkpoints are being carried out at checkpoints,” an officer involved told The Hindustan Times newspaper.
The case comes after five young men, including the son of a prominent regional government politician, raped a 17-year-old girl in the Telangana state capital of Hyderabad earlier this month.
In May, a 13-year-old Indian girl who went to the police to report a gang rape was sexually abused again at the police station by an officer in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
The event provoked outrage in the country and politicians and activists demanded urgent measures to protect women.
