Mount Etna Volcano Eruption in Sicily: Flight Cancellations, Ash Coverage, and Safety Concerns

Mount Etna on the island of Sicily in Italy has erupted. Catania Airport in Sicily, a tourist destination in southern Italy, was closed following the volcano erupted. Officials said all flights were suspended following the lava flowed into nearby areas. Lava spewed from the southeast crater of the volcano at a height of 2,800 meters. Due to the eruption, the entire southeastern region of Sicily is covered in ash. The mayor of Catania announced that traffic in several areas was dangerous due to the spread of ash.

At the same time, passengers who were supposed to travel via Catania should contact their airline and find other ways, Catania Airport said. Catania is an airport with around 200 flights per day. Authorities advised people to stay safe. Volcanic eruptions are frequent in the area.
