The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) reported an increase in volcanic activity and seismicity on Mount Ruang which is located in Sitaro Islands Regency, North Sulawesi.

Head of PVMBG Hendra Gunawan said that his party had raised the status of Mount Ruang from level III or alert to level IV or alert on April 30 2024, at 01.30 WITA.

“The community around Mount Ruang must remain alert and not enter the 6 kilometer radius area from the center of the active crater of Mount Ruang,” said Hendra in a report received in Jakarta, Tuesday (30/4).

From 1 to 28 April 2024, the number of earthquakes recorded was 6 eruption earthquakes, 15 avalanche earthquakes, 1 tremor earthquake, 1 non-harmonic tremor earthquake, 3 continuous tremor earthquakes.

Then, there were also recorded 2,057 deep volcanic earthquakes, 1,018 shallow volcanic earthquakes, 32 local tectonic earthquakes, and 195 distant tectonic earthquakes, as well as 7 earthquakes felt on the I MMI scale.

Meanwhile, the number of earthquakes recorded via seismic stations during April 29 2024, 00.00 to 24.00 WITA, was 15 avalanche earthquakes, 237 shallow volcanic earthquakes, 425 deep volcanic earthquakes, 25 local tectonic earthquakes, and 6 distant tectonic earthquakes.

In level IV status, residents living in the Tagulandang Island area within a 6 kilometer radius must be immediately evacuated to a safe place outside the 6 kilometer radius.

Residents on Tagulandang Island, especially those who live near the coast, are asked to be aware of the potential for ejections of incandescent rocks, hot clouds and tsunamis due to eruption material entering the sea or the collapse of volcanic bodies into the sea.

“Mount Ruang’s activity level will be re-evaluated periodically or if there are significant changes in activity. The activity level is considered constant if the next evaluation has not been published,” he added.

Mount Ruang is a strato-type volcano and has a peak height of 725 meters above sea level and forms its own island separate from the other islands.

After the paroxysmal eruption on April 17, volcanic activity generally decreased. (Ant/Z-11)
