Moussa Sène Absa, Senegalese filmmaker: “You cannot be a creator and see your country go down the drain without raising your voice”

On the telephone the voice is strong, joyful, animated by a youthful energy. Senegalese director Moussa Sène Absa is 64 years old. Self-taught, he traveled all over the world and dabbled in theatre, painting and music. Resettled in Popenguine, 75 km from Dakar for almost thirty years, he shot most of his films there, some of which have become classics. His very particular style – between comedy, chronicle of mores, storytelling and militant cinema – combines tradition and music in a unique way. He reveals some secrets without fuss and with a frank speech.
