Mozambique’s Art of Movement: Dance, Juggling, and Percussion

2023-11-19 00:04:17

Maputo-Mozambique mobilizes the art of movement, juggling, singing and percussion. Dance improvisations, ball juggling, bouncing on percussion, vocal percussion, juggling of plastic bags, and other manipulations of bullseye create sound, bodily, plastic images. A raw experience on the borders of dance, juggling and music.
The bodies on stage, the objects manipulated and the sounds they produce blend together and respond to each other in this show where the magic of juggling dialogues with the energy of Mozambican culture.
The show was born from the meeting between Thomas Guérineau and young Mozambicans during a juggling course in 2011. This creation, nourished by his interest in oriental and black African extreme arts, comes from a practice that Thomas Guérineau calls it “musical juggling”.

Creation, direction: Thomas Guérineau / Lighting creation: Christophe Schaeffer / Jugglers-musicians performing: Ernesto Langa, Lourenço Vasco Lourenço, José Joaquim Sitoë, Valdovino Claùdio de Sousa / Lighting and general management: Bartolo Filippone

The percussions become instruments of musical juggling, driving the sculptural bodies
of the four dancers in a dizzying hypnotic trance.
A refined staging, a choreographic ballet inhabited by the deep singing of the Mozambicans.
