David Leisterh, Brussels president of the MR, said he found himself in a weak position within the majority, even though his party refused to sign the act of presentation of Saliha Raiss who should in principle succeed Jef Van Damme (Vooruit) at the College of Mayors and Aldermen of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. In question: the MR criticizes Ms. Raiss for wearing the Islamic veil in the exercise of her functions, a choice which he considers incompatible with an executive mandate, such as that of alderman.
On Matin Première, Leisterh indicated that this called into question the secularism of the state. However, he stresses that “in Brussels, when you sign a majority agreement, the day after the municipal elections, you must remain in this majority until the end”.
He underlines that “the current situation will bring additional tensions within the Molenbeek college”.
