Müllauer and Svancer botched the start of the World Cup in Chur

The start of the World Cup season went wrong for Austria’s strongest ski freestylers Lukas Müllauer and Matej Svancer. Big air vice world champion Müller and fourth place finisher Svancer did not make it to the final in the qualification in Chur, which was brought forward to Thursday. But Daniel Bacher showed his talent: The only 18-year-old Tyrolean achieved the top score of 92.66 points with a spectacular “Switch-Tailbutter-double-14” and came first in Heat 2.

Bacher even pushed current world champion Troy Podmilsak (USA) into second place in his run. With constantly strong winds, Bacher surprised himself. “The fact that I’m now in the final was somehow a surprise to me. My goal today was to show what I’m capable of without stress. The judges especially seemed to like the nosebutter, which “I’m very happy. I’m overjoyed to be there tomorrow and I’m excited to see what awaits me tomorrow,” said Bacher before the final on Friday (8 p.m.).

For the winner of this 2021 City Big Air, Matej Svancer, there were heavy point deductions in both jumps because he missed the “grab” (hand on the ski) in both attempts. Müllauer “didn’t warm up” to the kicker, which consists of a scaffolding in a city competition: “After two bad training sessions, I had to reduce my level of tricks a bit.”

For World Cup debutant Noah Schallert, the day ended painfully even before qualification. After good training, he fell on his face in the final jump before elimination and suffered nasty-looking abrasions. Although there was a medical all-clear, the coaches then refrained from making a nomination. Ski Austria is not represented among women following the resignations of Laura Wallner and most recently Lara Wolf at the end of 2022.

After the hoped-for decision on Friday evening (hurricane-like winds are forecast for the day), the Big Air World Cup will not continue in Beijing until the beginning of December, with the entourage traveling to Copper Mountain two weeks later. It will then be three months until the Big Air finale in Tignes in mid-March. The Slopestye calendar is just a little more compact, starting on the 24th/25th. November on the Stubai Glacier. The Halfpipe World Cup ski season is scheduled to begin December 7-9 in Secret Garden, China. The freeski winter ends on March 24th in Silvaplana/Switzerland with slopestyle.
