At least one person was killed and five injured on Tuesday in the collapse of a multi-storey parking lot in New York, according to a preliminary toll that might rise quickly.

Authorities believe several people are believed to be trapped under rubble following the collapse that occurred around 4 p.m. on Ann Street in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District.

According to what the New York Fire Department told local media, at least one person was killed and five others were injured. Four of the injured had to be hospitalized, while the fifth person refused the treatment offered.

Fire Operations Chief James Esposito said the situation is “extremely dangerous”. The second floor of the five-storey building collapsed, rendering the rest of the structure unstable.

Rescuers use drones to venture into the debris, looking for additional victims.

“The building is completely unstable,” New York Mayor Eric Adams said at a press briefing at the scene of the tragedy.
