In parallel with their intervention for vehicles on fire in the Battice interchange, firefighters in the Vesdre-Hoëgne & Plateau zone have a lot to do this Tuesday, January 9 at the end of the day. Another fire broke out in a residential block located on rue de Grand-Rechain, in Petit-Rechain (Verviers). “A lot of smoke is visible. 20 firefighters are on site,” they indicated shortly before 5 p.m. “I was going out with my trailer and I was just going to put it there, behind in the field, when I saw the fire trucks passing by. And then I saw the smoke and the flames. After a while, they came out through the windows and the roof, it was still impressive,” underlined André Hardy, a local resident.

The building was fortunately empty. “It’s a house that was rented and right next door there is still half of the building divided into two apartments. My sister rented the house,” reported Loïc Catoul, present on the scene at 5:30 p.m. “For us, it’s a chimney fire since it started from the roof. But we are waiting for more information from the firefighters. It was my nephew who rang my bell. They had just returned from school, so there was no one in the house and by the time they arrived the fire had just started. They saw flames on the roof. They called the fire brigade. And when the firefighters arrived, they realized that it was really serious. They’ve been here for an hour and it’s still burning well!”

At 6 p.m., the street was still closed to traffic from the roundabout to the intersection with rue Les Pâturages and around thirty firefighters were still at work. “We have three pumps, two tanks and a ladder on site. It’s a fire in a block of flats with two completely engulfed in flames. There are no injuries. On the other hand, the two apartments are completely destroyed. We managed to limit the damage to the house, or water damage, but overall the front has nothing and neither does the ride behind,” specified the commander of the area, Quentin Grégoire, present on site shortly before 6 p.m. , and added, “The fire is calming down, but there is still work to do.”

Firefighters from the VHP zone were then called to a new fire (in addition to the one that broke out in a building in Blegny at 6 p.m.), a cellar fire on rue du Beau Site in Lambermont. But the evening is not yet over for them since they come to support their colleagues from zone 5 WAL for a building fire in Stoumont or still precede an extrication following a traffic accident in Honthem (Baelen).
