“I died alive”, image Brandon’s mother, this 18-year-old boy stabbed to death in Thônex three weeks ago. It was a minor who had struck, after an altercation, while the victim was returning home with his 17-year-old partner, pregnant. This Saturday, the family and relatives of the young man from Nicaragua organized a white march in Lignon, in Vernier, the neighborhood where he grew up and which he loved very much. “Here, it’s a zoo, but we are well received. Whites, blacks, Arabs, it’s equal, the important thing is to be together, ”describes the big brother of the deceased.

“Let parents watch their children”

The approximately 70 people present, very disciplined and dignified, parade around the bars of buildings. The Nicaraguan community is there. The young man’s friends too. They claim “Justice for Brandon”, calmly. Nobody vociferates. “I would especially like to send a message to the parents: that they watch their children, explains the cousin of the deceased. The murderer was 16 years old! It is necessary to show more severity, not to let them go out at night. A family is destroyed. Just seeing his mother’s pain hurts. The authorities must do what is necessary. He (note: the author of fatal blow) has already done it, he can do it again. I hope he will not be protected.”

A woman explains that she came “as a mother” because she too has an 18-year-old son. “We’ve known for years that this team (note: it’s a group of teenagers who confronted Brandon on the evening of the facts) fucks the box and we don’t do anything. On the other hand, to control swarthy people, the police are there. It’s not possible, I’m outraged.”

“Justice for my son”

The procession, punctuated by Latin songs with sad chords, stops for a moment in front of an alley. Brandon’s Mom spoke, first in Spanish, then in French. “We want justice for my son. It can’t stay like this. His little girl is going to live without a dad. All of us, his family, his friends, we are all hurt. It can’t stay like this.” Shortly afterwards, as an aside, she added that she was “afraid that the assassin would come out in three years. That, I don’t want. They ruined my daughter-in-law’s life. It’s already terrible, but afterwards, when she gives birth, it will be worse.” The young woman is there, moreover, but does not wish to speak. Not now.

Last Tribute Raised Fists

Then the troop dressed in white headed down the Lignon towers, where they briefly stopped. A woman of a certain age explains. “We, the Nicaraguan community, we are together, no matter what situation each family is going through.” A compatriot remembers an anecdote close to her heart. “My son and Brandon were 8 years old, they had just arrived in Switzerland. We were in Rolle, by the lake. My son couldn’t swim, he almost drowned. It was Brandon who saved him. He saved his life.”

The assembly finally moves into the courtyard of the school. There, his friends line up, fists and signs raised, in a final tribute: “Justice for Brandon! Long live Brandon! Let it not happen again!”
