For over 70 years, linguists have been puzzling over a script whose language it actually belongs to. Several short inscriptions have been found in what are now Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and they were written around 200 BC to 700 AD. A breakthrough has now been made: in 2022, another inscription was discovered, which a young German research team has now deciphered. For the unknown Kuschana script, the bilingual text is something like the Rosetta Stone that made it possible to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs 200 years ago.
