Mystery Men Emerge From New York City Sewers Near Netanyahu’s Hotel
Security cameras near a New York City hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was planning to stay captured three unidentified men emerging from the municipal sewer system before dawn on Wednesday, according to the New York Police Department.
The unusual pre-dawn emergence unfolded at approximately 4:30 a.m. when the three individuals popped out from a Manhattan manhole before quickly departing the scene by car. The timing and location triggered heightened security protocols, though investigators emphasize there is currently no established link between the scavengers and the Israeli leader or the ongoing United Nations General Assembly.
Understanding the Scavenger Phenomenon Beneath the Streets
The NYPD noted a pattern over the past few months of unauthorized individuals descending into the sewer system to search for valuables and scrap metal, particularly following storms.
“We have seen a number of incidents over the past few months of individuals going into the sewer system to look for valuables and other scrap metal after a storm,” the NYPD said in a statement to NBC News.
Police investigators believe the three men captured on Wednesday morning are the same individuals documented in similar underground incidents earlier in the year. In late May, unauthorized groups not affiliated with any public works crews were caught on camera climbing out of manholes across various Brooklyn neighborhoods, as well as entering a sewer via manhole in Queens.
Heightened Security Sweeps and Federal Coordination
Manhattan is currently hosting the U.N. General Assembly, prompting a law enforcement posture across the city.
“This incident fits that same criteria, but out of an abundance of caution given the U.N. General Assembly and the sensitivity of the location, the NYPD is conducting additional security sweeps with our federal partners,” the police department detailed in its official statement.
The NYPD confirmed that a strong operational response was deployed overnight alongside additional security measures implemented throughout the day.
