Swiss hi-fi brand Nagra has its roots in sound recording: the first product, developed in 1951, was a miniature audio recorder called the Nagra I. The Nagra II and III that followed had a major impact on the world of broadcast, film and music Music, which later even helped Nagra to win two Oscars. In the meantime, they not only manufacture recording equipment, but also high-end hi-fi devices – such as the Nagra Classic DAC, which was produced from 2016 to 2021. But the device was not left alone for long: Nagra will be presenting the Classic DAC II at High End 2023.
Nagra Classic DAC II: Further development of a top model
The Classic DACII fits into the larger Nagra Classic series, which also includes a preamplifier, a phono preamplifier and two stereo hi-fi amplifiers. The Classic DAC II integrated same NADM-Technologies (Nagra Audio Digital Module), as well as the well-known HD DAC X and tube DAC by Nagra. In this way he supports all modern high-resolution Formate How DSD (256) and DXD. According to Nagra, particular focus during development was on playing classic CD quality (16-bit/44.1 kHz) according to the so-called „Red Book“–Standard.
Inside, the Nagra Classic DAC II houses Class A amplifier technology including individually measured and selected military-grade transistors. More technical data will soon be shared on the website.

Of course, the whole thing has its price: According to the colleagues at WhatHiFi, the Classic DAC II should cost around 18,000 euros. In fact, that is a comparatively low price, at least for a Nagra D/A converter: the DAC flagship HD DAC X has a recommended retail price of 64,500 euros. The Classic DAC II will be available from selected retailers from May 2023.
