Nail stretching is a phenomenon among women of all ages, attracted by the different sizes, shapes and durability. The procedure is considered relatively safe when properly performed, but it is not suitable for everyone.
Dermatologists warn that pregnant women, diabetics, immunosuppressed people – such as patients undergoing cancer treatment -, children and adolescents under 16 years old should avoid stretching. The guidance is present in the Acrigel Nails guide: recommendations for your health and safety, from the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), from 2022.
Dermatologist André Moreira, from ADA Clínica, explains that the procedure can cause trauma to the nails and serve as a gateway to infections. Diabetics and immunosuppressed patients are at greater risk of being infected by microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi.
“In the case of those under 16, they are more susceptible to allergen sensitization. As for pregnant women, there are no studies that prove its safety for the fetus if the mother suffers any complications”, says Moreira.

Physician Fabiane Brenner, a member of the SBD board, adds that people with hypersensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light, present in nail polish drying cabins, or who use some medications may have allergic reactions on their hands.
In Fabiane’s evaluation, people, in general, should avoid stretching. “It should not be a routine procedure because it can temporarily or permanently alter the nail bed (the layer between the finger and the nail)”, says the doctor.
According to the doctor, who is also part of the technical chamber of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), the agency is keeping an eye on the materials used in the procedure with the aim of regulating and preventing harm to the population. “People can have allergies or irritation to these artificial nail products,” she says.
