Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan: Xi Jinping calls for not “playing with fire”

Go or not go? Nancy Pelosi lets the suspense hang over her intentions to make a detour via Taiwan during an upcoming visit to Asia, which might cause renewed tension between the United States and China. The Speaker of the House of Representatives would thus be the highest American political figure in a quarter of a century to visit the island claimed by Beijing. The issue came up Thursday during a more than two-hour phone call between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping, with the latter calling for “not playing with fire.” Earlier this week, Chinese diplomacy warned that “if the United States persists […], they will have to bear all the consequences”. During the same discussion on Thursday, the two leaders agreed to organize a summit.
