Edward Michael “Mike” Fincke has retired from NASA after a 30-year career, concluding a tenure marked by four spaceflights, 549 days in orbit, and nine spacewalks. The retirement, announced on August 12, 2026, follows a premature return to Earth from the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Crew-11 mission due to a medical incident.
From MIT and Stanford to the Launchpad
He followed this with master's degrees from Stanford University in 1990 and the University of Houston–Clear Lake in 2001.
Before selection as a NASA astronaut, Fincke served as a pilot and engineer, logging over 2,000 flight hours across more than 30 types of aircraft. NASA selected him as part of the 16th astronaut group in April 1996.
Four Spaceflights and Orbital Leadership
Fincke’s flight record includes his launch aboard Soyuz TMA-4 in 2004 to support Expedition 9 on the ISS. He returned to orbit in 2008 aboard Soyuz TMA-13, where he led Expedition 18 and executed two spacewalks. In 2011, he flew on the STS-134 mission involving space shuttle Endeavour. His final flight launched in August 2025 as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 mission. During that flight, he served as a flight engineer for Expedition 73 and commander of Expedition 74.
The Crew-11 Medical Event and Return to Earth
On January 7, 2026, while aboard the ISS, Fincke experienced a medical incident that required attention from his crewmates and NASA flight surgeons on Earth, according to updates published by Novinky.cz. The event involved a sudden loss of the ability to speak for roughly 20 minutes. Because the ISS lacks advanced medical imaging tools required for a thorough diagnostic evaluation, the return was executed out of maximum precaution rather than an emergency evacuation. The crew returned to Earth on January 15, 2026. Upon reaching Earth, Fincke received hospital care where medical teams attributed the incident to the effects of the weightless environment of space on the human body.
