Researchers have recreated the Columbia River Basalt eruption in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The basalt explosion is estimated to have taken place between about 15 million and 17 million. Findings related to the explosion were published in the journal Geophysical Research.

Extreme volcanic eruptions are expected to have a major impact on the Earth’s atmosphere, causing cracks in the ozone layer. Such changes may adversely affect the Earth’s climate.
