Orbital Cameras Reveal the Falcon 9 Impact Scar
Between August 11 and August 12, 2026, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter captured detailed images of the impact crater formed when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket upper stage crashed onto the lunar surface on August 5. The crater measures 18 meters in wide and under 3 meters deep, featuring distinct dark and bright streaks radiating from the site.
Precision Timing from 100 Kilometers Up
Photographing a precise point on the Moon requires immense orbital coordination. According to data released by NASA, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter had to wait six days for the targeted impact site to rotate directly into its field of view. Technicians then had to precisely pitch the spacecraft so its onboard camera pointed toward the crater from an altitude of approximately 100 kilometers.
Timing the shutter was razor-thin. As the agency detailed, if the camera had snapped the picture a mere 10 seconds too early or too late, the target would have shifted roughly 16 kilometers away from the center of the frame. These targeted observations build upon initial images of the crash site published by the South Korean space agency on August 6.
Exposing Weathered Dust and Pristine Subsurface Material
The newly published orbital data highlights distinct contrasting patterns surrounding the 18-meter-wide depression. According to NASA, the darker streaks stretching away from the impact are composed of surface dust and rocks that have been weathered over long periods by solar wind, galactic cosmic rays, and micrometeorite impacts before being churned up by the collision.

A Growing Catalog of Human Debris
Conversely, the brighter streaks consist of pristine material excavated from deeper layers of the lunar subsurface during the high-velocity impact.
