According to CNN on the 7th (local time), the oxygen generating equipment MOXIE mounted on NASA’s unmanned Mars exploration vehicle ‘Perseverance’ has completed all requirements for the experiment. The experiment was conducted for about two years after the rover landed on Mars. Moxy, mounted on the rover, works by converting some of Mars’ abundant carbon dioxide into oxygen. According to NASA, Moxxi produced 122 grams of oxygen, the equivalent of a small dog breathing in about 10 hours. At peak production efficiency, Moxy produced 12 grams of oxygen per hour with more than 98% purity, twice NASA’s original target. Moxy completed all missions on August 7 and was activated for the 16th and final time. The final experiment produced 9.8 g of oxygen. “We are proud to have demonstrated a technology that can transform Mars’ local resources into resources needed for future exploration missions,” said Trudy Cortis, director of technology demonstration for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate. “We are one step closer to the future,” he said.
