On Friday, Sept. 11, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted unanimously to begin the formal process of renaming the city’s aviation hub after the late country music legend Dolly Parton, securing an initial 6-0 approval that marks the first step in a multifaceted process.

The unanimous vote by the airport authority board does not immediately establish a brand-new moniker for the facility, but it sets clear wheels in motion. According to the board’s official statement, the 6-0 decision represents the first step in a multifaceted process to weave the singer’s name and enduring legacy into the airport’s identity. While a final title is still being deliberated, Dolly Parton International Airport appears to be the obvious de facto possibility.
Parton passed away last month at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, prompting an outpouring of grief and remembrance worldwide. Before her death, the superstar herself offered a characteristic, lighthearted quip when asked about the prospect by the Tennessean newspaper. Reflecting on a potential jocular catchphrase, she laughed off the idea in January 2025, telling reporters, “I think that’s probably more of a joke than anything. I mean, it does sound like a lot of fun to say: ‘Your flight is departin’ from Nashville’s D. Parton.'”
Broad Public Momentum and Official Backing
The administrative action follows a groundswell of public enthusiasm. A grassroots push via a Change.org petition garnered more than 175,000 signatures urging officials to update the facility’s name. Crucially, the initiative found champions at the highest levels of Tennessee state and local government.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee voiced strong support for the rebranding effort, thanking the airport authority board for taking decisive action. Gov. Lee praised the move as an “important step to honor her remarkable legacy,” noting that the entertainer has always helped the world fall in love with Tennessee. Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell also backed the transition, aligning local leadership behind the memorialization.
Logistical Realities and What Remains Unchanged
Rebranding a major international travel hub is no small feat. Considerable expense would go into rebranding the entire airport and its facilities. Yet, aviation operations will maintain a vital anchor: the familiar three-letter airport designation, BNA, will remain completely unaffected by the official name change.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority indicated that it anticipates sharing more definitive implementation plans in the coming months as it works closely with appropriate parties.
