In France, according to the French Dys Federation, around 7 million people, children and adults, are affected by at least one dys disorder or specific language or learning disorder. Every year, a national dys day is organized, which takes place this year on October 14, 2023, on the theme “I am “Dys”… and later what will I do? “.
A national day dedicated to dys disorders
Launched for the first time in 2007, the national dys dayorganized each year by the French Dys Federationis an opportunity to mobilize parents, members of associations and professionals around France throughout specific language or learning disorders, more commonly called Dys disorders. On this occasion, the actors take stock of the Dys disorders in France, but also set the objectives to be achieved for the coming years.
Thanks to these initiatives, dys disorders are becoming better known to the general public, but also to professionals and the children affected are increasingly better identified and cared for. Dys disorders belong to neurodevelopmental disorders and correspond to specific language or learning disorders (TSLA). They are characterized by dysfunctions in one or more of the following cognitive functions:
- Language ;
- Motor coordination;
- Perception ;
- Attention;
- Memory ;
- Visuospatial functions;
- Executive functions.
Nearly a dozen different dys disorders
The three most well-known dys disorders are:
- The dyslexia corresponds to a specific and significant impairment in reading;
- The dyspraxia includes developmental coordination disorders;
- The dysphasia corresponds to severe disorders of language development;
But these three disorders do not represent all Dys disorders, which also include:
Each Dys disorder has its own specific signs that you need to know to better identify them, but it is common for the same child to present several Dys disorders simultaneously.
Early identification and personalized support
Depending on the child, dys disorders are expressed more or less severely. They appear between 5 and 10 years of age and are not always immediately identified by families, educational professionals or health professionals. However, these dys disorders can have major consequences on the child’s education and on their social and family life. The diagnosis allows us to better understand the specific needs of the child and therefore to put in place the most appropriate approaches to help them continue their learning in the best conditions.
A multidisciplinary, personalized approach, in which the speech therapist, the psychomotor therapist, the occupational therapist and the psychologist play key roles is essential to improve the child’s quality of life, optimize their learning and therefore guarantee their integration and success at school and then in studies and beyond in working life. Better knowledge and recognition of dys disorders is essential for each child to be diagnosed and cared for.
