Belgian flags fluttered in the wind, among a few signs reading: “You don’t have to be Jewish to fight anti-Semitism”, or “Jewish joy is resistance”. . Passing in front of the Jewish Museum and the Great Synagogue, the procession then went to Place Poelaert, where songs and speeches were planned.

Hatred of Jews is worth a march

The Union of Jewish Progressives of Belgium (UPJB) marched in a common bloc, somewhat apart from the main procession, saying it was “against anti-Semitism and all forms of racism” and firmly denouncing “the “instrumentalization of the fight against anti-Semitism for racist or Islamophobic purposes”.

A feminist and anti-racist Jewish bloc took part in the procession, wanting to be “consistent with democratic values and the moral rigor required in the fight against anti-Semitism – the recent resurgence of which in Belgium and throughout the world is alarming.”

No partisan banner was present, but a large number of political figures were present, such as Paul Magnette (PS), Rajae Maouane (Ecolo), Georges-Louis Bouchez (MR), Sophie Rohonyi (DéFi) , Elio Di Rupo (PS) and Maxime Prévot (Les Engagés). The PTB had announced its absence, judging the event to be used to prevent criticism of the State of Israel.
