In response to the ‘National Police Chiefs’ Meeting’ held in protest against the Ministry of Public Administration and Security’s enforcement of the establishment of a police department, the police command took a stance that “strict action will be taken against those who attend.” As the command team foretells a tough response to a meeting where participants voluntarily gather on the weekend, opposition within the organization is expected.

On the 23rd, the National Police Agency said, “Considering the public concern regarding this general meeting, we are aware that it is a serious situation that the meeting was held despite the urge to refrain from the meeting and the order to disband.” After that, we will take strict measures against the attendees.”

This statement of position in the name of the National Police Agency was announced by surprise around 5:35 pm that day, when the National Police Chiefs’ meeting was in full swing.

The National Police Agency said, “In addition, we plan to specify the matters to be observed in the service discipline so that a similar situation does not recur, and to respond strongly to violations in the future.” We will secure a consensus on the issue and establish a strict discipline for public service.”

Ryu Sam-young, head of the Ulsan Central Police Station, who proposed this meeting, said, “We all came here because we got permission and followed the legal process on holidays. I think,” he said.

At the national police chiefs’ meeting, 56 superintendents appeared as of 2:00 pm. 133 executives also participated in the meeting through the online video conferencing system. There are about 600 police officers nationwide, and nearly 30% of them publicly voiced their opposition to the establishment of the police station. Including those who expressed their support for the flower pots sent to the meeting site, about 60% of the total superintendents expressed their disagreement with the establishment of the police station.

Liu met with reporters before the start of the meeting and said, “I am fully aware of the heavy duty of the police chief and the seriousness of the situation. He is fully performing his duties and is participating in discussions related to police reform in various ways.” He said, “This is a place to have an in-depth discussion about whether the establishment of a police station within the Ministry of Public Administration and Security is legal and justifiable.” .

Earlier, police chiefs such as Yoon Hee-geun, a candidate for the National Police Agency, and Kim Kwang-ho, chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, expressed their intention to resist the National Police Chiefs’ meeting several times. Minister of Public Administration and Security Lee Sang-min also said, “Now is not the time to discuss things like that. I think it is very inappropriate.”

The presidential decree and the ordinance of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security for the establishment of a police department within the Ministry of Public Administration and Security and the enactment of command rules for the Commissioner of the National Police Agency passed the Vice Ministers’ Meeting on the 21st, followed by the State Council meeting on the 26th, and are expected to be promulgated and implemented on August 2.
