As part of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the Lanaudière Suicide Prevention Center (CPSL) was awarded a major grant of $75,000. The organization’s board of directors considered it important to share this subsidy with the rank-and-file worker service of the Union of Agricultural Producers (UPA) of Lanaudière by giving it the sum of $30,000.

Mr. Claude St-Pierre, president of the organization at the time of the presentation, explains: “Psychological distress is present in all spheres of society. The CPSL is pleased to be able to offer financial support to the rank-and-file worker service of the Fédération de l’UPA de Lanaudière to intervene with agricultural clients, who are particularly affected by climate change and inflation, between others. Sharing this important grant illustrates the collaborative work between our two organizations. »

The concept of rank worker, inspired by the street worker, is part of a proactive preventive approach. The worker goes to meet agricultural producers, directly at their business, in order to detect and intervene if a producer, or someone close to them, shows signs of psychological distress. This service is confidential and free. The suicide rate among farmers is unfortunately twice as high as that of the general population.

“The issue of psychological health is a priority for the UPA. Many factors add to the workload of farm families and the presence of our rank and file worker allows our members to better prepare to meet these challenges. It is important to use this available service to help with ventilation and I invite my colleagues to benefit from it if necessary,” says Mr. Marcel Papin, president of the Fédération de l’UPA de Lanaudière (FUPAL). .

In 2022, more than 200 interventions will be held in the Lanaudière region. Ms. Manon Houle, row worker, believes that the service is more relevant than ever: “it is essential for me to offer a presence in the territory and a service that meets a pressing need among agricultural customers. The economic context, far from improving in the short term, continues to bring its share of problems and with it, the psychological distress that results from them. All efforts are also being made to maintain the free service.”
