Islamabad, February 14 (EFE).- The three-time prime minister of Pakistan and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, appointed his brother, also former president Shehbaz Sharif, to the position of prime minister. , in the absence of achieving the necessary support from other forces to achieve a parliamentary majority.
“Nawaz Sharif has nominated Shehbaz Sharif for the post of Prime Minister of Pakistan,” announced the party’s spokesperson, Marriyum Aurangzeb, in a message on X.
His access to the position, however, is at the expense of the PML-N, which was the second most voted force in last week’s elections with 75 of the 266 seats in the National Assembly (NA, Parliament), reaching a simple majority (133) with the support of other parties.
The president of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), led by former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zarzadi, the third political force, yesterday offered his support to the candidate presented by the PMLN, when Shehbaz Sharif had not yet been proposed for the position.
The sum of both parties, however, would be insufficient to form a Government, so the party led by Nawaz Sharif also maintains talks with other minor parties that would allow them to achieve a parliamentary majority, such as the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM). -P), which has 17 seats.
Shehbaz Sharif served as prime minister during the last term, when a no-confidence motion pushed by the PML-N and supported by the PPP removed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan from power.
The PTI candidates, who were forced to run as independents due to a judicial setback, won the largest number of seats in the elections, with around ninety, although they have denounced that the electoral process was manipulated.

“Half of the seats won by the PTI were stolen by the illegitimate regime in the late hours of the night (and) the following days, through unprecedented massive (and) brazen manipulation,” the PTI said on Wednesday in X, ensuring that he had achieved a majority to govern alone.
By attending as independents, the opposition party will also not have access to the reserved seats, which hinders its chances of forming a Government.
Shehbaz Sharif headed the Pakistani Government between April 2022 and last August, when he dissolved the National Assembly and made way for an interim Government headed by the current acting Prime Minister, Anwaarul Haq Kakar.
During his short term, the way was paved for the return to Pakistan of his older brother, Nawaz Sharif, who went into self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom in 2019 to flee several prison charges that had led him to jail in the Asian country.
On the contrary, the PTI suffered during Shehbaz Sharif’s mandate the arrest of several of its leaders, including Khan himself, who has been in prison since last August following being convicted in multiple cases.
