NBA Approves New Rules on Flopping and Coaches’ Challenge for 2023-24 Season

It’s been in the papers for a while, it’s been tested in the Summer League and it’s now official: the NBA will adopt two new rules on flopping and the coaches’ challenge. Small point regulation on these two novelties.

Yesterday, the NBA Board of Governors met to vote on the adoption of two new NBA rules. Already announced two weeks ago, they went through the Summer League lab and were voted on by franchise owners yesterday. This is Shams Charania from The Athletic who announced it.

Just in: The NBA Board of Governors has approved two new gameplay changes for the 2023-24 season, per sources:

– In-game penalty for flops resulting in technical foul free throw
– A second coach’s challenge awarded if first challenge is successful

As a reminder, the first rule is about flopping, a practice of exaggerating contact with an opponent in order to obtain a whistle in his favor. The solution that has been found to combat this scourge is to penalize the player who “flops” with a technical foul, synonymous with a free throw for the opponent. Simple and effective in deterring floppers, but a bit excessive according to some players, notably De’Aaron Fox who spoke about this new rule: “As if the referees need more power” tweeted the Kings point guard.

Lol yeah refs needed more power

The second rule concerns the challenge, the possibility for coaches to request a video verification of a referee’s decision with which they do not agree. Previously, coaches only had one challenge, regardless of the outcome. But from next season, they will have the possibility of recovering a second challenge if the first one is successful. A good way to reward coaches who have the eye and to mitigate the consequences of refereeing errors. Please note that there will be no third chance.

The trial period is over, time for the formalization of the new rules in the NBA. If the second does not suffer from any dispute, the first does not yet seem to be unanimous, as evidenced by the first debates which appear on the Blue Bird. SPutting it into practice as soon as the season resumes may make some people change their minds!
