NBC News Poll Shows Democrats Lead Republicans Ahead of 2026 Midterms

Days ahead of the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, a national NBC News poll shows Democrats holding a 52% to 45% advantage in the battle for control of Congress. The widening gap is fueled by a surge in voter demand for political change and an all-time high 60% disapproval rating for President Donald Trump.

The new survey, conducted from October 28 to October 30, captures a deeply polarized electorate where nearly three-quarters of voters express dissatisfaction with the state of the economy. With all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats contested, the outcome will establish Washington’s political balance for the final two years of Trump’s second term, as reported by ETV Bharat.

Shifting Margins and Independent Discontent

The national NBC News poll indicates that Democratic congressional candidates lead Republicans by a 7-point margin among registered voters, up two points from the previous month. This advantage expands significantly among independent voters, who favor Democrats by 21 points. A separate NPR/PBS News/Marist poll cited by News18 similarly places the Democratic advantage among likely voters at eight points, with 52% backing Democratic candidates and 44% supporting Republicans.

Despite these numbers, the political landscape remains complex. Registered voters give both parties roughly even marks on handling key issues, and the Democratic Party itself continues to face deep unpopularity. Only 29% of voters view the Democratic Party positively, compared to 38% for the Republican Party, with roughly half of the electorate holding negative views of both major political organizations.

Economic Pressures and Presidential Disapproval

Economic anxiety remains the dominant driving force behind voter sentiment. Approximately 3 in 4 voters head into the midterms dissatisfied with economic conditions. For the first time in 30 years of NBC News polling, more respondents expressed dissatisfaction with their personal financial situation (51%) than satisfaction (49%).

President Trump’s approval rating stands at 40%, while his disapproval has climbed to 60%—a new high across his two terms in the NBC News survey. Voters rank inflation and the cost of living as the nation’s most pressing concerns, followed by government corruption, threats to democracy, and immigration.

Polling Metric Democratic Party / Position Republican Party / Position
NBC News Congressional Preference 52% 45%

NPR/PBS/Marist Likely Voters 52% 44%
President Trump Job Approval — 40% (60% Disapproval)

The Battleground Terrain and Voter Enthusiasm

While national numbers favor the opposition, the structural battle for Congress runs through deeply contested terrain. Republicans maintain an advantage in GOP-held districts and in states that Trump won during the 2024 presidential election. In those specific regions, however, the president’s approval rating has slipped into negative territory, with 53% of registered voters disapproving of his job performance.

Enthusiasm remains high, with 70% of voters rating themselves at a “9” or “10” on a scale of election interest. Democrats hold a 12-point advantage among these most-engaged voters. As both parties make their final appeals ahead of Election Day, the remaining 3% of undecided voters recorded in the final days of October could determine the outcome of dead-heat races nationwide.
