In her speech at the 15th Congress of New Democracy, Annita Dimitriou, president of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and president of DISY, pointed out that “New Democracy and Democratic Alarm run parallel lives. Both the New Democracy and the Democratic Alarm were born from the ashes of our national difficulties, with the main goal of the survival of the nation, the rebirth of Greece and Cyprus”.
He underlined that “the New Democracy and the Democratic Alarm will always put the good of the country first and foremost. Against all forms of populism and extremism, we oppose our common visions based on healthy patriotism and unwavering faith in the principles and values of the European Union and Western civilization. The rule of law, respect for human rights and individual freedoms, the social market economy, a strong Greece which also means a strong Cyprus, will never cease to be the cornerstone of our policies”.
He specifically referred to “a historical moment that we cannot ignore is the image of a Greek prime minister applauding in the American Congress. At this particular moment, a new Greece was emerging. A Greece that stood proud, dignified and haughty in equal measure towards its allies and partners. A Greece that achieved recovery with effort and sacrifices and ceased to be the poor relative of the European family”.
He also emphasized the great responsibility for the historical continuity of Hellenism in Cyprus and the supreme duty to achieve the best possible result on the basis of the agreed framework, the Bizonic Bicommunal Federation, with political equality. A solution that will be based on the resolutions of the United Nations and international law, the principles and values of the European Union. A viable and functional solution, which will lead to the creation of an independent and sovereign state, free from guarantee and intervention rights, free from the presence of foreign troops”.
