Nebenzia: The Security Council must urgently study the issue of imposing sanctions against Israel

New York – Russia’s Permanent Representative to the Security Council, Vasily Nebenzia, confirmed that the Council must urgently consider the issue of imposing sanctions on Israel, for its non-compliance with the Council’s decision to cease fire during Ramadan.

Nebenzia said during a Security Council session yesterday, Wednesday: “We remind you once again that non-compliance with mandatory Security Council resolutions must lead to the imposition of sanctions on violators. We believe that the Council must consider this issue without delay.”

He pointed out that UN Security Council Resolution No. 2728, which called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the month of Ramadan, was not implemented.

Earlier, Nebenzia stated that Russia calls on Israel to follow the example of Iran, which said it does not want further escalation.

Nebenzia also expressed Russia’s grave concern about the continuation of Israeli operations in the Gaza Strip, despite the resolution previously adopted by the UN Security Council demanding a ceasefire.

He said during a previous session of the Security Council, “We are deeply concerned about this blatant disregard by the Israeli leadership, with the complicity of the United States, regarding a legally binding resolution of the Council.”

On March 25, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution No. 2728, which calls for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, leading to a “permanent and sustainable ceasefire,” and the lifting of “all obstacles to the provision of humanitarian assistance on a large scale.” According to the text of the decision.

This comes at a time when Israeli military operations continue in the Gaza Strip, in light of a major scarcity of food, water, medicine, and fuel, and a decline in the number of operating hospitals and medical centers that provide services to the population.
