The chief dental officer at Bupa Dental Care, Neil Sika, said poor oral hygiene is taking a toll on the lungs, especially for the elderly. Speaking to “Express”, “Sika” stated that the mouth that contains a lot of bacterial plaque can cause respiratory infection or pneumonia if these bacteria are inhaled and spread in the lungs.

He stressed that poor oral health may increase the risk of lung damage, in addition to that there are studies that have confirmed that there is a link between poor oral health and pneumonia, so individuals should be concerned about maintaining oral and dental health, by brushing the teeth twice a day for two minutes with toothpaste. Contains fluoride.

He also advised to attend regular dental examinations, and to visit the dentist and hygienist at least once a year for a professional examination and cleaning of the mouth, in addition to not smoking, exercising regularly, and eating healthy food.
