The majority of migrants entering Austria illegally come via Hungary. In 2022 it was over 80 percent of the more than 100,000 asylum seekers. This year, for most, the path runs through Viktor Orbán’s empire once more. Hungary’s Schengen border with Romania and the EU’s external border with Serbia are by no means sealed. There is a reason for the low number of his own asylum applications, which Orbán flirted with at the migration summit: once migrants are in the country, his officials wave them on to Austria. “The smuggling routes mainly run via Serbia and Hungary,” confirms the interior ministry.
