Neither medicines nor medical supplies in Cuba, Díaz-Canel assures that shortages will persist 2024-03-15 04:49:37

The Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in a meeting with authorities from the Ministry of Health in Cuba (Minsap) assured that the shortage of medicines and necessary supplies on the island will persist for longer.

Díaz-Canel acknowledged in a report from the Presidency that the shortage of medicines and medical supplies on the island will continue, despite the critical situation that the country’s pharmacies and hospitals have faced for a long time.

The president also addressed the lack of resources and the flight of professionals from the health sector on the island and mentioned the existence of “negative trends” such as the “sale of services” within the health system, as well as the resale of medicines and supplies in the black market. But he did not offer solutions to this healthcare crisis.

“Given the lack of supplies and medicines, the best response we can give to our population in such difficult times is the quality of services, with shortcomings, we will have them, we are going to continue with a lack of medicines“he confirmed.

Medicine shortage in Cuba will persist, according to Canel

Since 2020, Cuba faces a serious shortage of basic medicines, a situation that affects the population and limits access to medical care. In September 2023, BioCubaFarma, the business group of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, announced the acquisition of supplies for the manufacture of 16 medicines with a deficit. But there are at least 200 medications with a deficiency.

The shortage of medicines continues to be a problem, and the demand for all the products in the basic table has not been met. After these statements by the president, the ball “stings and spreads.”

Despite BioCubaFarma’s announcements, there is still no definitive solution to the shortage of medicines in Cuba. Additional measures are needed to increase domestic production, diversify supply sources and reduce dependence on the international market.
